Top Ten Books I Wouldn’t Mind Santa Leaving Under My Tree This Year
I’m in the process of rebuilding part of my library of books. When I moved from Maryland to Colorado it seems a box has gone missing. Grrr. So, I’m taking stock of what I have and what I don’t have.
I read these in college as an English Lit major and some I enjoyed more than others, but I didn’t thoroughly enjoy any of them. I always said that I would go back and read them after I graduated and had some life experiences. And maybe just maybe I would enjoy them.
- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov
- The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
- To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
- A Passage to India by E.M. Forester
- Moby Dick by Herman Melville
- Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
- The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer
- Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift
- Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
The Broken Spine 
Of those ten, I’ve only read three: To The Lighthouse, The Scarlet Letter, and Gulliver’s Travels. I read To The Lighthouse on my own as an adult when I went through a super Virginia Woolf phase, and I loved it. I keep meaning to re-read it but haven’t yet. Great list!

Thanks Laila! I’m not a huge Virginia Woolf fan and I think that’s because of my college studies and having to analyze the work. So, putting her on this list was a bit hard for me; but who knows maybe I’ll become a love of Woolf. Gulliver’s Travels is one of my favorites and The Scarlet Letter ranks pretty high. I loved Hester.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Grapes Of Wrath, and I regard it as one of the great books of the 20th century. Moby Dick was a tough slog, but I’m glad I read it. The Iliad had its moments but bogged down during the listing of the ships and then again during the memorial games. I agree with those who regard The Odyssey as the first modern novel. For me, it was a page turner. These four are worth reading again, especially The Grapes Of Wrath and The Odyssey. Thanks for the list. It brought back some good memories.

Hi Robert, I will agree with you on Moby Dick and The Odyssey. After I posted this list I was going through and see which books made it in the cross country move and to my surprise neigh Moby Dick or The Odyssey had, so maybe that’s a sign to let that sleeping dog lie.

If you’ve read the Illiad, I would say you’re not an ‘uneducated lout’ at all. And maybe through the TTT you’ll see something you’d like to read
