Top Ten Tuesday – Bookish Favorites

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. I’m going to forego this week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt. Oh, what a rebel I am. But I won’t forego Top Ten Tuesday because today’s Bout of Books challenge is a favs list.

Today is all about sharing your favorites. Get wild. Share your favorite author, audiobook, book, series . . . if you have a favorite anything, today’s the day to shout it out.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t have a lot of favorite authors, audiobooks, books, or series

If you’ve been following me for any length of time you already know that Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is one of my all time favorites. And you undoubtedly have seen me mention Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. Having said that, I need to move on. Find some new favorites authors, books and series to gush and fangirl over.

But in the meantime

I won’t say that what follows constitutes as favorites, but I have liked and enjoyed reading them.

  1. As far as a series goes I’d have to go with Håkan Nesser‘s Inspector Van Veeteren series. At first, I didn’t like him, but Nesser’s writing style grew on me
  2. I’ve read two of the three Binti trilogy books by Nnedi Okorafor and absolutely love them. I will reserve saying that the Binti trilogy is a new favorite series or Nnedi Okorafor is a favorite author until I have finished the trilogy. But. . . .
  3. One of the best books I read last year was Dear Martin by Nic Stone
  4. I devoured both volumes of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis in a few days. This got me back into reading at what my then boyfriend called comic books. I gently corrected him and explained the difference between comic books and graphic novels

Here are few that I hope will live up to the hype and become favorites

  1. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  2. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  3. Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James
  4. The Odyssey by Homer, Translated by Emily Wilson
    • NOTE: I read The Odyssey in college and enjoyed it, but I’ve heard that Wilson’s translation is really good. So, maybe. . .

I never really read graphic novels before but I’ve gotten more into them over the past few years. I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re as good as novels but they’re definitely an art form and I think people tend to underestimate their quality. I personally thought reading ‘The Odyssey’ was one of the all-time most boring experiences of my life. I’m somewhat interested in reading ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ and ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’ they aren’t the kind of stuff I usually read but I’ve heard great things! 🙂

I just read Persepolis and was riveted! It’s such an important, moving story.
