Quote of the Day — Rumors

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.  Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. . . But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it . . .

~~ Gautama Buddha aka Siddhārtha Gautama

I was thinking about how rumors get started today, particularly since this rumor could potentially affect me.  Firstly, I don’t engage in gossip or the spreading of rumors, and if I do hear about it I’m one of the first to squash it. Secondly, if it involves me, I’m on the hunt for the person who started it so I can set them straight.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly rumors get started and I’m always astonished at how easily people buy into them.  I really don’t understand the need for people to start rumors or gossip.  I often say that their own lives must be pretty messed up, so they start these negative rumors about others in order to: 1) make themselves feel better, 2) bring someone down to their level, 3) try and make someone else look bad or feel bad.

As Rodney King put it during the 1992 Los Angeles riots “Can’t we all just get along?”

Interview with Myself

I came across a training exercise I did when I was a technical training supervisor (almost 8 years ago).  We had to interview ourselves, which admittedly was pretty awkward.  So, I went back and answered them again just to see if any of my answers had changed. Some did and some were more positive and some were more cynical while others were completely different.

1. What would you tell you 16-year-old self?

16 can be a horrifically awkward point in your life, but it’s important to discover who you are and not let anyone try to change you. Be a leader, not a Continue reading

Quote of the Day — Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

~~ Reinhold Niebuhr

This quote is actually piggy backing off the one from yesterday (thank goodness I haven’t lost to many minutes due to being angry today).  I have a thorn in my side of a colleague and I am trying my very best not to be nasty, but she is really starting to get to me.

I started repeating the “Serenity Prayer” and as I did it brought back the memory of my grandmother saying this Prayer.  She would always say it when someone would tick her off to the point where she wanted to have words with them or as she would say “cut them”.  On that front my grandmother and I are very much alike — hot tempered, high strung, strong willed, and not much for letting people treat us any kind of way.

Having said this a few times today, I have come to the conclusion that this person means me no good and for whatever her reason(s) she has it in for me.  Now that I am fully aware of this and I can’t change her mind, I am at peace with it.

And I am a little bit wiser today, too.

Quote of the Day — Angry

For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.

~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

When I came across this quote, I had to stop and think of the powerful meaning behind this seemingly simple statement.  I thought about something that happened at work on Friday and left me seething for a good portion of the day and I had to keep reminding myself that the person who threw me under the bus has moved on, but yet I could not.  So if I go according to this than I lost about 5 or 6 hours of happiness Friday.   Now that really burns me up. 😡

But I did come up with a really good revenge plan.  👿 bahwahwah
