Classics Club Spin #21

It’s that time again! Time for The Classics Club Spin #21.  I was on pins and needles the last Spin, hoping the number picked would be a book I was anxious to read. So, here we are again and the nerves are settling in AGAIN. 🙀

I’ve only been participating in the Spin since #17 and I have to say it’s not been a particularly great or fruitful experience, but I keep trying because there has got to be a classic that I haven’t read that I’m going to finish and enjoy.  Below is how my Spins have panned out so far.

  • Spin #20 – The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis was a DNF. Not sure it’s for good, but I have to admit I really didn’t care for it. And I never started The Problem of Pain
  • Spin #19 – Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achabe was a DNF. This one broke my heart. I really enjoyed this in high school, but for some reason I really didn’t care for it
  • Spin #19 – Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin was also a DNF. This was one of the last Baldwin works I haven’t read and oh my gosh I don’t even think I got 25% of the way through
  • Spin #17 – 1984 by George Orwell was chosen and I tried, but was not in the mood for dystopian literature. DNF’d but not for good

But, I’m going to give it a go – AGAIN!

How does the Spin work? It’s as easy as 1-2-3. Really. Choose 20 books from your Classics Club list, that you have yet to read and post the list to your blog before Monday, September 23rd.

All you have to do is read the book that corresponds to the number and review it by October 31st, 2019. Seriously,  can it get any easier?

I kind of cheated a bit this go round. I selected only 10 books that are end of year priorities and repeated them (only trying to pad the odds).

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  2. The Plague by Albert Camus
  3. Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
  4. Quicksand by Nella Larsen
  5. Cane by Jean Toomer
  6. Candide by Voltaire
  7. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  8. Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
  9. Cane by Jean Toomer
  10. Candide by Voltaire
  11. The Plague by Albert Camus
  12. Quicksand by Nella Larsen
  13. Candide by Voltaire
  14. Cane by Jean Toomer
  15. Quicksand by Nella Larsen
  16. Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko
  17. The Plague by Albert Camus
  18. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  19. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  20. Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko

Which book would you like to see me read for The Classics Club Spin? What book are you hoping to read as your CC Spin?

Both are on my gooodreads Reading Women Challenge and I’m behind, so it would be great if one of these got picked.

Fifth time lucky? I’ll cross my fingers for you! Some of my Spin titles have been awful, but most have turned out well.

I vote for the Nella Larsen title, because I was going to put Passing on my Spin list, but then I realized that I can’t actually get to the book right now (on account of half my bedroom furniture being in front of that bookshelf) so I switched it out. If you like Quicksand, I’ll try to read that sometime too.

Eenie, Meenie, Minie – To Kill a Mockingbird? lol, Yeah, few repeated to pad it out, but this one stuck out. And actually, I think that’s the only one remaining that I have read.

To Kill a Mockingbird has been on my TBR for a while and I really need to get it read before the end of the year.
