Stacking the Shelves May & June

I’ve been thinking about sharing the books I procure throughout the week, but never have as I don’t try not to buy books every week and I must admit I’ve been doing a pretty good job of it. But I thought I’d give it a go this week since I got some pretty good book booty. So, buckle up this is going to cover May and June.

I found the Stacking the Shelves meme sometime last year and thought it fit me best.

Some of you may already know that I work at Barnes and Noble (B&N) part-time. There are many days in which I say pay me in books. Of all the jobs I’ve had this is by far one of my favorites. Right now they are having a sale on B&N Classics, so I had to. . . I mean I really had to.

I’ve wanted to read Candide by Voltaire for years now and never got around to it. One because I never had the book. I know. I know. I could have gone to the library to check it out but whenever I’m at the library I’m there for another purpose and it’s not on my radar. So, not only is this part of the sale it was strategically placed on the table whereby every time I walked by I saw it. How rude.

The Art of War by Sun Tzu is another classic I’ve wanted to read. I’ve been eyeing it at the bookstore for some time and yep with the sale decided to pounce.  I did check the library for this but to my surprise and chagrin, they don’t have a single copy. Whaaat? It’s The Art of War for cryin’ out loud. You’ve got a copy Mein Kampf but not The Art War. Something’s very wrong here. You’ve got Nietzsche but not Sun Tzu. Well, you get the point. I have it now, so I’m going to hop off my high horse.

My next spoil is The C.S. Lewis Signature Classics. C.S. Lewis is another author I’ve wanted to read for a while. Something other than The Chronicles of Narnia, which by the way I loved. I put The Screwtape Letters on for my book club and when I saw that there was a box set I said to myself, “Self, gotta have it.” This box set comes with 8 books, which should keep me busy for a while.

I snapped up the ARC of Jo Nesbo’s The Thirst when I saw it on the breakroom table at B&N, and since I’m a fan Nesbo and Harry Hole (hehehe I laugh at that every time I say it). Not sure when I’ll have an opportunity to read it though. I originally wanted to get it read before the end of June, but since I have so many unfinished and upcoming book club reads it’ll probably be around the end of summer.

Procured in June

I bought 28 Days of Clean Eating because 1) I need to eat healthier and 2) I’m determined to get back to my pre-freshman in college body, even if it was 20+ years ago. Determined, I say! Determined! 🏋️‍♀️💪🍎 I also picked up my July book club read Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami.

I purchased The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan when the bookstore I work at had employee appreciation week. I swear they just need to keep my check during those weeks. But I managed to hold back. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy of The Hate U Give at the library but there’s a waitlist of (at last check) about 20 people.

Now I’m all about supporting my local library, so when I saw that they were having their summer book sale the weekend of my birthday I immediately put on my calendar. However, it’s painfully obvious I’m all about supporting libraries that aren’t in my county. My boyfriend and I went to the JeffCo (Jefferson County) Whale of Sale Used Book Sale on June 4th. It was the last day and the deal was everything you could stuff in a grocery bag for $6 buck. What the?!?

  • Beasts of No Nation by Uzosinm Iweala
  • Adiós Hemingway by Leonardo Padura Fuentes
  • The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
  • The Japanese Love by Isabel Allende
  • The Island of the Day Before by Umberto Eco
  • The Phantom by Jo Nesbo

We were mocked by what we called less discerning book buyers because we didn’t fill our bag and we were shown pity by the lady checking us out – she only charged us $5.00, which is still a steal considering between the two of use we got 7 books. All of them look brand spankin’ new. We’re kinda real picky that way.

So, there you have it my book haul for May and June (so far).

What books did you get this week (purchased, ARC’s, gifts, etc.)?

Working in a book shop must be so tempting, dangerous even if you are trying to restrict your buying. I don’t think I would be successful

I am definitely not successful. Right now I have two more books I want to purchase. I’m trying not to but it’s hard.
