Book Beginnings & The Friday 56 – The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae

This year I’m participating in several reading challenges, and this week’s Book Beginnings and Friday 56 is an added book to my Diversity Reading Challenge.

I remember hearing about the Awkward Black Girl YouTube series when the book came out and watched a couple of episodes and laughed til my gut hurt. I also related to everything she talked about. This weekend after I saw this book fly off the shelf at the bookstore (I work part-time at a bookstore to feed my book addiction), I decided to buy it. So far, I’m quite happy I did.

At only eleven years of age, I was a cyber ho.

Um. Hold up. Put the brakes on. 11 years-old and a cyber ho. Really? You’ve got my attention. Now I’m obligated to read on.

The Ratchet Black:
Previously known as “The Ghetto Black” or “The Hoodrat Black,” these blacks are always pitted as black embarrassment. They are generally referred too as the Bottom-of-the-Barrel Blacks. Shaped by their environment, they are frequently feared and misunderstood.

The Approach: Put on your Black-cent, if you have one. If your Black-cent isn’t natural, don’t force it; Ratchet Blacks will sniff your out. Make eye contact; don’t act superior, because you’re not. Don’t be intimidated; just be yourself. If they don’t sense an immediate connection, they will walk away form you, because you are weird.

I definitely recommend it. There are some serious LOL moments. It’s a super easy and fast read. I finished it about a day and half.

It’s different from what I usually read, but I’m glad I picked up. Maybe I’ll read more from the humor genre.
